Old Town Temecula Street Painting & Plein Air Art Festival

Fine artists of all ages will be colorizing  Old Town Temecula during the Street Painting and Arts Festival,  June 20-22. Artists will start their works of art on Monday June 16 and continue throughout the week, while street painters and muralists will begin Friday even, June 20th.

Plein air is a French expression, meaning "in the  open air" or painting outdoors.  Plein air artists begin painting Old Town Temecula scenes on canvas and paper,  Monday, June 16,   while string artists  decorate  benches, trees, the gazebo,  and other objects at Sam Hicks Memorial Park.  Titled Yarn Splash,  the string  projects  will be completed Saturday,  June 21. The yarn art remains  in place  through August 24.

Plein air artists paint with oils, water color, pastels and acrylics, through Sunday, June 22. . Temecula's plein air festival is inspired by Ralph Love, a popular California plein air artist who lived and taught in Temecula. His Art Shack was located where Baily's Old Town Dining is now located.

Artwork completed during the Ralph Love Plein Air Festival will  be on display in the Temecula Civic Center, 41000 Main Street,  Saturday and Sunday.  

Muralists, pastel artists, and painters cover the black top of Main and Mercedes Streets at Town Square Park, with vibrant pastel paintings.  With asphalt as their canvas,  street painters have been painting Old Town Temecula's streets for 14 years.  Artists come from as far away as Arizona and Washington to participate in Old Town's Street Painting Festival. Over 140 artists painted 92 murals in 2013.

A unique aspect to Temecula's Street Painting Festival is the family and youth area provided. Here young artists and their parents can paint small two-foot-by-two-foot blocks using the very same pastels that the master painters use for their 10-foot by 12 foot murals. More than  1,800 squares will be made for participants. THIS IS FREE as is admission to all of the art activities.

"It will take most artists 24 hours to finish the largest murals," explained the event coordinator Melody Brunsting. "It's fun to watch their creations develop from a light sketch to a vivid painting. Yet, for the artist, it is a grueling endeavor on hands and knees," she added.

 Street Painting  applications are available at the City of Temecula as well as online at temeculacalifornia.com.  Street Painting begins at 5 p.m. Friday, June 20. Saturday and Sunday hours are 10 a.m.to 5 p.m. Most artists, however,  begin painting at 7 a.m. both days, with some painting into the night Saturday. All murals must be complete by 3 p.m. Sunday for judging.

All three artistic endeavors are part of the Temecula Art Festival. Artists will also display and sell fine art paintings, ceramics and jewelry during the Art Festival June 20-22 at the Temecula Civic Center.

Street Painting, Plein Air, and a Yarn Splash at Sam Hicks Park - Its the 14th Annual Temecula Street Painting Festival

          Painters and muralists will fill the streets during the  14^th Annual Old Town Temecula Street Painting Festival June 20-22, 2014.  Temecula's Street Painting Festival draws thousands of visitors a year and is part of the City of Temecula Arts Festival.   The Ralph Love Plein Air Festival, now in its seventh year, begins  Monday,  June 16  this year with artists painting Old Town Temecula scenes through Sunday,  June 22.  At Sam Hicks Park artists will create yarn art utilizing trees, benches and other components of the park.

         Street painters begin their creations on Friday,  June 20 at 5 p.m.  Over 140 muralists and fine artists create giant pastel murals on Main and Mercedes Streets in Old Town Temecula during the event.  It will take most street painters 18 to 24 hours to complete their murals.  Gayle DuRivage, the 2013 Best of Show winner, will be the featured artist. DuRivage has won the best of show four times in the event's 14-year history. Many of the artists started with the Festival as teenagers and return each year.  Tim Krejci, the 2013 People's Choice winner, began street painting at the 2001 Festival as a middle school student. Now competing as an adult, Krejci, 24, is one of the Festival's top muralists.

         "It's rewarding to see the artists return every year, and watch the youth develop. Many of the artists who started with us 14 years ago, now help teach new artists.  It's like a family reunion when the artists start to arrive.  They enjoy the camaraderie and spirit of the Festival.  Many of them street paint at other festivals throughout the year," stated organizer and founder of the Festival, Melody Brunsting.

           Street painting festivals are held throughout California beginning  each spring and continuing throughout the fall.  Now one of the largest street painting festivals in California, the Temecula event produces over 90 giant murals annually.  A large family area is provided for spectators to  try their artistic hand at using pastels on asphalt.  The 2013 event had 1,620 small squares decorated by spectators.  Artists come from all over California, Washington, Arizona and Colorado to paint.

           Street painting  Best of Show winners receive a $500 cash prize and are honored the following year as the featured artist. Additional prizes are awarded for People's Choice, Best Monochromatic, Best Theme and Best Youth with two age categories.  This year's theme is "Be the Dream."  Blick Art Materials, with several store locations in Southern California, will be providing gift cards to street painting winners.

          The Temecula Street Painting Festival is one of four artistic ventures during the weekend in Old Town Temecula. The Ralph Love Plein Air Festival offers a $500 purchase award from the City of Temecula. First place award is $200;  second place award $100. Plein air artists paint from June 16 to the 22 in Old Town. Look for artists with easels in little nooks of the town.  Finished plein air pieces will be on exhibit and for sale at the Temecula Civic Center Conference room beginning on Saturday at 10 a.m. The exhibit ends on Sunday with the 4:30 p.m. awards ceremony.

          Yarn Splash is a new concept for Temecula's art week.  Artists will decorate trees, the gazebo, light posts, fences, trash cans and benches to create a vibrant and radiant atmosphere from Monday, June 16 through the Saturday, June 21. This is a first-time event within the Temecula Arts Festival and is hosted by the Temecula Valley Museum.  The yarn art creations will remain in place until August 24.

Western Days Chili Cookoff Offers bigger Prizes and Advancement to World Championships

Do you have a winning Chili Verde recipe, or a traditional red chili recipe that leaves your tongue on fire? Enter the 2014 Old Town Temecula Western Days Chili Cookoff on May 18, and you could win $500 cash for traditional red or $300 for Chili Verde.  Plus, Temecula's Chili Cookoff is a Regional International Chili Society (ICS) sanctioned cookoff where winners automatically qualify for the World’s Championships, in Palm Springs, CA this fall.  Chili winners also qualify for the World Food Championships  in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A cast of crazy cowboys openly plot their mischievous ways, announce their intent and then rob The Bank  at the corner of Old Town Front Street and Main at high noon.

            The Temecula Valley Museum offers cultural entertainment during the Western Days weekend.  Saturday's activities include spinning and weaving demonstrations, Judy Taylor and Her All Girl Band - the Wild Oats, and a living history performance "Notable Women of Temecula."  Both Saturday and Sunday visitors can experience Temecula History: A Third Grade Perspective, and Western Photography by Miley. Sunday, the gazebo at Sam Hicks Monument Park features Los Californios, song and dance music of early California.

Kick Up Your Heels with a Jig and Sligo Rags Friday in Temecula

Sligo Rags, the Irish/Celtic Rock band that plays at the Temecula Bluegrass Festival every year to a packed house of standing ovations, will be in Old Town Temecula this Friday, August 19 for their only summer appearance of Hot Summer Nights. The band has had a busy summer, playing twice a week at Disney’s California Adventure and almost daily for the past month. Sligo Rags was named one of the top acoustic bands in L.A. by “Folkworks Magazine” and has won the Orange County Music Award for Best Folk Band twice. Playing original and traditional Irish, Bluegrass and Celtic tunes with a rock twist, and always energized with the antics and vocals of fiddler Michael Kelly, Sligo Rags turns rock fans into jig-dancing Irish music buffs. David Burns is an award-winning flat-picking and finger-style guitarist whose vocals and song writing give the band it’s unique flair. Add percussion from Jonathan Baer (who always seems to smile) and the band keeps audiences toe-tapping and clapping. Sligo Rags plays at Baily’s Courtyard from 7 to 10 p.m. Duchicela hails from Ecuador and offers the music of the Andes with their enchanting  tunes played on hand made pan flutes, guitars and percussion instruments. The word Duchicela in the pre-Incan language of Puruhua means “the mountain lion who led the people to their homeland.”  This band spends much of the year performing throughout Hawaii and returns for the summer to hit the Southern California scene. Get a load of the jacha toyos, pan flutes that are nearly four feet in length and provide the deep notes of the Andean  music. These flutes require well-developed lungs and tons of experience.  Another instrument played during their performance is the charango, a small-ten-stringed instrument, that until recently, was made with the  shell of an armadillo.  Duchicela blends traditional Andean folk music with popular cover tunes. They play from 6-9 p.m. at Villa di’ Calabro. For classic rock and Willie Nelson fans, the band Two of Us Plus one plays their final concert of Hot Summer Nights at the Temecula Cheese Company from 6:30-9:30 p.m. What started as a duo with Fred  Schaffer and Craig Chojnowski  has grown to a four piece band - hence the “plus one.” This is actually a four-piece band now with Jennifer Orris on guitar, and Dave Rodway on the drums. Together they play Beatles tunes, mixed with soft classic rock ballads from the1960s and 70s.  An extension of the group’s personality  comes alive when they perform their Westcoast Willie  & Friends segment of the concert, featuring Willie Nelson’s most popular tunes. Rounding out the musical variety night in Old Town Temecula is the Valley Winds Big Band.  Hot Summer Nights is sponsored by the City of Temecula. A community band that plays throughout the year, the Valley Winds Big Band performs with the classic big band style of music stands, slide trombone and clarinet solos, and tunes from Benny Goodman to Stan Kenton. Plein Air painters and visual artists are encouraged to enter the fourth Annual Ralph Love Plein Air Festival that runs concurrently with the Old Town Temecula Street Painting Festival Friday June 24 through Sunday, June 26.

The Ralph Love Plein Air Festival offers a $500 purchase award from the City of Temecula. First place award is $200 and a weekend stay at Dorland Mountain Arts Colony. Artists' choice award is $100. An event within the event, Plein Air artists paint on location on canvas sometimes painting the street painters who are on their hands and knees creating murals.

A silent auction of the plein air paintings is held Sunday, June 26, 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Villa di Calabro. Artists can name their starting price and receive all of the proceeds of the auction.

Byron Berline, The Grascals and Bluegrass Etc in Temecula for 11th Annual Bluegrass Festival

National Bluegrass headliners will take the stages of the 2011 Old Town Temecula Bluegrass Festival March 18 thru 20. This is the 11th year for the event sponsored by the City of Temecula which features a dozen bands in concerts throughout town.



It features a national fiddling legend with Byron Berline and his band. Uniquely configured, the Byron Berline Band includes a drummer lending a Bluegrass and Country sound. Berline is a three-time National Fiddle Champion who turned to a musical career after earning a B.A. in Physical Education at the University of Oklahoma. Berline has a Who’s Who list of bands that he has either led or been a member. They include: Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys, Dillard & Clark, Dillard Expedition, Berline, Crary & Hickman, California, and the Byron Berline Band. He’s recorded with The Band, The Byrds, The Eagles, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, John Denver, Elton John, Linda Ronstadt, Rod Stewart, Vince Gill, Arlo Guthrie, Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Earl Scruggs and Mason Williams.


The Byron Berline band is part of the Saturday/Sunday line up of free concerts all day, workshops in the Merc at the Old Town Temecula Theater, and jamming throughout the town.

Also performing during the weekend are Bluegrass Etc. with Dennis Caplinger, Hunt Family Bluegrass,Sligo Rags, The Girlz, Fine Line, Windy Ridge, Bluegrass Brethren and Next Generation on stage, plus Older than Dirt near Rosa's Cantina on Saturday and jam session 5 p.m. at Embassy Suites, the host hotel for the event.


The event opens Friday night, March 18, with Highway 138 playing a free concert at Sweet Lumpy's restaurant Friday at 6 p.m. and The Grascals, recent winners of the Instrumental Group of the Year at the Annual Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America Awards at 7:30 p.m. at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater.


The Grascals also have their personal best Billboard chart numbers, with the current #1 Top Bluegrass Album (four consecutive weeks) and peaking at #23 on the Top Country Album chart with their newest CD, "The Grascals & Friends - Country Classics with a Bluegrass Spin." The Grascals have also won awards the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Emerging Artist of the Year award in 2005 and earning its Entertainer of the Year honor in both 2006 and 2007.


The Grascals embody a profound grasp of and familiarity with country and bluegrass tradition that made them a natural choice for Dolly Parton to turn to for recording and tour support in 2004. The group continues to push the envelope and, in 2010, The Grascals joined The Rowdy Friends Tour with Hank Williams, Jr. They’ve performed at the Grand Ole Opry, Kennedy Center, Radio City Music Hall, Wintergrass, and the Stagecoach Festival. Bluegrass Etc. is a nationally known band that performs a hard-hitting show of instrumental expertise and vocal precision. Known for their energy and stage personality, Bluegrass Etc. offers two performances each day. The group tours more than eighteen countries per year, and performs more than 200 shows annually at festivals and in concert. Bluegrass Etc. consists of John Moore (mandolin, guitar, vocals), Dennis Caplinger (banjo, fiddle, vocals), and Bill Bryson (bass, vocals).

Caplinger is a multi-talented musician who has toured and recorded with a variety of top artists including Eric Clapton, Vince Gill, Byron Berline, Dan Crary, Chris Thile, Sean Watkins, Kevin Welch, Ray Price, and Rita Coolidge. He has worked on countless jingles, commercials, cartoons (Pinky and the Brain) and movie soundtracks. Bryson played with the Desert Rose Band.


Hunt Family Bluegrass has been performing together since 2004. The leader of the band and father, Terry, grew up in the Ozarks of North Arkansas and learned to play the banjo and guitar at an early age. In addition to playing guitar with HFB he is the manager of the flight program at Oklahoma State University. He has recently completed his Doctorate in Aviation and Space Education. Leanne Hunt plays a 1947 Kay M1 bass with HFB. Son, Jonathan Hunt, 15, plays banjo and sings harmony vocals for HFB. Andrew, 18, plays mandolin and fiddle, and takes both lead and harmony vocals.


A Saturday evening concert at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater includes the top three daytime bands on one stage: The Byron Berline Band, Bleugrass Etc. and Silverado Bluegrass. The concert begins at 7 p.m. and tickets ($15) are available at www.temeculatheater.org.


Sunday's free concerts include Byron Berline, Bluegrass Etc., Silverado, Bluegrass Brethren, Windy Ridge, The Hunt Family Bluegrass, Sligo Rags and The Girlz.


"Pickers" (Bluegrassers’ term for musicians) jam anywhere along the rustic streets of Old Town Temecula. Old Town Merchants will place shade pop-ups near their stores to encourage jammers.


Free workshops Saturday and Sunday are held in the Mercantile and help instigate the free flow of jamming around town. Band members lead the workshops and provide the audience a chance to pick and play with their favorites. On Saturday Dennis Caplinger of Bluegrass Etc will teach a workshop on Banjo, David Burns fro Sligo Rags will teach flat pick guitar, and Byron Berline will teach fiddle. Sunday workshops include "The Family Band" with the Hunt Family Band, and Mandolin with John Moore from Bluegrass Etc.,

Santa's Electric Light Parade in Old Town Temecula

Santa's Electric Light Parade makes its first trip through Old Town Temecula tonight at 7 p.m. The popular holiday parade features dozens of homemade floats from families, organizations, and businesses, as well as bands and Santa Claus.

It starts at 7 p.m. but street closures start early to make way for the parade. Your best bet is to get into town by 4 p.m. and Park in the Old Town Parking Structure or park along Pujol  Street, or anywhere outside of the Front Street parade route and walk in. Plan on staying until the parade is over.

There are plenty of restaurants and shops to keep you warm. Adults will enjoy the numerous wine bars, olive oil tasting rooms and Old Town's Temecula Cheese Company. The Temecula Sweet Shop and candy store features candies from baby boomer's  childhood, jelly bellies, fudge and handmade chocolates. Temecula Root Beer is just that plus a few shirts, hats and sweatshirts.

A quick rundown of street closures: the south end of town closes the earliest. Old Town Front Street at 1st closes at 4 p.m., cross traffic at first is open until 6 p.m.; north end of Old Town Front Street closes at 6 p.m.; cross streets of Main Street closes at 6 p.m.; The Sixth Street parking lot and Stampede Parking Lots are closed for staging of the parade. A Quilt Walk featuring quilts in 21 Old Town Temecula stores begins September 17 and continues through October 2. Quilts have been chosen to uniquely complement each participating store. Aunt Kizzyz Boyz, Guilty Conscience, Silver Beatles open Hot Summer Nights In Old Town Temecula

Take a Friday Night vacation from the work week in Old Town Temecula during Hot Summer Nights, July 9 through September 3, 2010. The weekly Friday night series of entertainment and music is part of the City of Temecula’s Summerfest promotion that began with the Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival June 4th and finishes with Labor Day Weekend.

Hot Summer Nights opens July 9, 6 to 9 p.m., with a musically-charged line up of Aunt Kizzy’z Boyz, The Silver Beatles, Guilty Conscience and Diego playing at different locations in Old Town.

Aunt Kizzy’z Boyz, a rocking blues band that packs Old Town Temecula every year, returns to the Old Town Front Street Bar & Grill (Baily’s Courtyard from 6 to 9 p.m.) The concert is free.

Bandleader Jimmy King on vocals, harp and guitar formed the Aunt Kizzy’z Boyz after sitting in with top musicians from Santana and Joe Cocker’s band. Vocalist Sugaray became interested in music while attending church, infusing a strong gospel style to his singing. He is known for his high energy and ability to get the entire crowd enthusiastically involved. Other members include Dwane Hathorn on drums, Joe Schiavone on bass guitar, Michael Mack on keyboard, and Bastos Moenho “Moe” on percussion.

The Silver Beatles will play at the Old Town Plaza at Old Town Front Street and Moreno. The Silver Beatles, a southern California Beatles tribute band, provides an uncanny reproduction of the sounds of the Beatles. This talented band, takes the audience on an audio “Magical Mystery Tour” visiting the entire Beatles repertoire along the way. They play from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Guilty Conscience will be playing at Temecula Cheese Company on Front Street at Fifth from 6-9 p.m. A multi-talented band that can play top 40 tunes and favorite rock tunes from the past, Guilty Conscience was so popular at previous Hot Summer Nights spectators raised tips to convince the band to play another set.

Friday, July 16, features The Bill Magee Blues Band, L.A. Jones & The Blues Messengers, Duchicela, and the classic rock cover band Two of Us Plus 1.

L.A. Jones and The Blues Messengers represent a new breed from the old school of the blues; crossing spiritual and musical boundaries and pioneering a style that is all their own. The band blends popular jump swing of the great Texas and West Coast traditions with 1950’s Chicago Blues traditions. This energized blues band will play at the Old Town Plaza at the corner of Old Town Front and Moreno.

Bill Magee’s Blues Band has been voted best blues band in San Diego by the San Diego Music Association and the “Reader” magazine. Magee offers a New York/Chicago style of blues that is electrifying and reflects his passion for the blues. He has played with greats B.B. King, Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Otis Redding, John Lee Hooker and Bo Didley. Magee also spent several years on the road with the James Brown Revue. His band will play at the Baily’s Courtyard on Old Town Front Street from 6-9 p.m.Low Down Dirty Blues

Duchicela, a popular Andes Pan Flute Band, will return to Old Town Temecula at Villa di’ Calabro’s patio on Main Street. Using handmade wooden flutes, drums and rain sticks, this unique band recreates popular tunes, jazz and rock, into a new age retreat from the world.

Friday, July 23 will see the return of the Irish/Bluegrass band Sligo Rags, Viento Libre with Salsa tunes, and the big band sounds of Valley Winds. Kids can try their blocking and scoring skills against the Soccer Collies. Offering country-fried rock and rocking country, Nitro Express returns July 30th along with The Sixes, Hoodoo Blues and Older than Dirt.

Each Friday night also features Dynamite Dave with his crazy and free balloon hats and Deejay Geoffrey Gaier with games and prizes for the kids. Street Painting Festival & Plein Air event in Old Town Temecula June 25-27

Painters and muralists will fill the streets of Old Town at the 10th Annual Old Town Temecula Street Painting Festival and 3rd Annual Ralph Love Plein Air Festival Friday June 25 through Sunday, June 27. This year organizers are bringing in lights for night painting on Friday and Saturday

“We’ve started a second division - Black and White at Night -for artists who prefer cooler temperatures, but also to offer a new challenge,” explained Melody Brunsting, event producer.

Over 100 muralists and visual artists create giant pastel murals on Main Street in Old Town Temecula during the event. Families, children, and beginners join in the creative endeavor in the family section where more than 500 smaller squares are blocked out for spectators to paint with pastels on the asphalt canvas.

The Black and White at Night division is for monochromatic and black and white murals. Lights will be provided the artists for night time painting until 9 p.m. All artists can paint into the night, but the lighting purpose was to encourage monochromatic paintings.

“Many artists want to enter both categories; the traditional full color palette and the black and white at night. It’s a new challenge that they are eager to try,” Brunsting added.

Traditional street painting is done with a full color palette of pastels. Pre-registered artists receive a 48-piece set of artist’s pastel chalk. The traditionalists and families will start Saturday and Sunday at 7 a.m. Their creations often take 12 to 20 hours to complete.

The 2010 featured artist is local muralist Jesus Gutierrez. He won the 2009 event for his entry “Aztec Princess.” A special treat this year is provided by the art students at Mount San Jacinto College/San Jacinto campus. They will be creating a giant 3D painting on Main Street similar to the popular “chalk guy” Julian Beaver.

The Ralph Love Plein Air Festival started three years ago and offers a $500 purchase award from the City of Temecula. An event within the event, Plein Air artists paint on location on canvas.

Plein Air Artists will scatter throughout Old Town in search of the perfect scene depicting the historic town. The event was named after Ralph Love. For many years, Ralph Love taught as well as painted. His students were made up of avid artists throughout Southern California, and their classroom was the wide-open spaces. On rainy days, the class would meet in the old Art Shack in Temecula, California, which Love opened in the mid-fifties. It was from this Art Shack that his work received national recognition. The courtyard at Old Town Front Street Bar & Grill is now known as the Love Courtyard and the scene of numerous concerts during Hot Summer Nights.

Both art events are free to the public and one of the many event offerings provided by the City of Temecula during Summerfest. Artists can still register for the events and children and families can participate at the event without registration. They are provided free pastel chalk and a place to try their creative hand at street painting. Classic Rock tunes from the Two of Us will entertain Friday evening. Flamenco guitar by Javid and Maoko provide a Latin and world music backdrop on Saturday. Sunday live Big Band tunes by the Valley Winds will close out the Festivals.
